The Wines of Spain
Published in Paperback by Survival Books Ltd (15 September, 2001)
Authors: Graeme Chesters and Survival Books
Average review score:

disappointing
This is little more than a long listing of producers. Very little detail is furnished about regions or producers. As an indication of this book's user-unfriendlyness, there is not even an overall map of Spain showing the locations of the wine-producing regions. Rather, hand-drawn rough sketches of small portions of maps of small areas are presented without any clue of how they relate to one another. This is just one of several manifestations of extremely low general production values. The disappointing thing is that the author did seem to do his homework, and in many cases can identify the better producers in a region or the best offering from a producer even when this information is quite obscure. ...

The perfect companion
A unique guide that is designed for the wine drinker rather than the coffee table.Over 2,000 Spanish wines are described extremely accurately judging by those I've tasted.(While I would agree everyone has their own palate I would also argue that everyone can distinguish a good wine from an average one.)In short if the author says the wine is 'good' or 'recommended' then that is the case.Additionally,a useful indication of price and value is given.
The introduction states that 'these are exciting times to be studying and drinking Spanish wines' and this book is the perfect companion.

Big Surprises come in Small Packages
This small book is truly a gem. With turn-of-the-century photographs and beautifully written prose-poems, Laura Chester captures childhood memories, which sends one back into their own childhood. It is a real pleasure.

All Shot Up
Published in Textbook Binding by Chatham Bookseller (June, 1960)
Author: Chester B. Himes
Average review score:

This book was "da bomb"
Lots of action, lots of laughs and the 2 toughest detectives since Spencer & Hawk. If you like Harlem, if you like detective novels, if you like action, this is the book for you. A very quick read. Fans of Walter Mosely should read this book. I wonder if good ol' Bill Clinton is up on Mr. Himes. My only thought is why were there only 2 movies made from Mr. Himes books. And why did I just discover him after I saw one of the movies (A Rage In Harlem)

The Ancient Romans
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (April, 1985)
Author: Chester G. Starr
Average review score:

Enjoyed
As this was the text book for a classical civilization course I took, I found that this book was pleasantly readable, unlike most college texts. It was detailed enough so that it almost read like a novel at times, yet covered over 1000 years in the history of Rome so that it served as a good knowledge base. In addition, I enjoyed the fact that it took the knowledge one step further and analyzed WHY certain events occured (eg. the fall of the Western Roman Empire and why the East survived). I find many history texts that simply focus on WHAT occured and don't get into more detail. I liked how Starr divided Roman History into four units, with each section revolving around a central and important figure in Roman history (Hannibal,Caesar,Hadrian,St. Augustine). I found the "Roman Life" sections after each Unit to be a little bland at times, but the sections that were good were well written to hold my interest. I am very intrigued with ancient Roman history, and I found this text to be a worthwhile book, for academics or leisure.

Blind Faith: Confronting Contemporary Religion
Published in Hardcover by Prometheus Books (January, 1995)
Author: Chester Dolan
Average review score:

Clear, intelligent, but Utopian dream is tough to swallow
Mr. Dolan's views are clearly and intelligently stated, and they present an excellent interpretation of humanist thought. He truely makes a point. His optimism about a world without God, though, is almost as fantasy-based as the "religions" he writes against.

Chainsaw Sculptor: The Art of J. Chester "Skip" Armstrong (Folk Art and Artist)
Published in Hardcover by Univ Pr of Mississippi (September, 1995)
Authors: Sharon R. Sherman and Skip Armstrong
Average review score:

Cahinsaw Sculptor:The art of J. Chester 'Skip' Armstrong
This book is a fine addition to any admirer of contemporary wood sculptor. Sherman offers a unique insight into the thought behinde Skips' carving. A thought provoking book that took me as a chainsaw carver to a new level. Fine pictures of Skips magnificent work and humorous stories of Skips life. The story of how this artist took the focus from the saw to the increadible pieces of art that can begin with the chainsaw. The only thing I would have liked more would be a larger version of this book.

Chester Himes a Life
Published in Hardcover by Interlink Publishing+group Inc ()
Author: James Sallis
Average review score:

Derivative biography of a sphynx
Expatriate African American writer Chester Himes's complicated life is the subject of a biography published in 2000 by detective novelist James Sallis, a longtime Himes champion. Sallis's biography weighs in at 368 pages. It is readable despite numerous repetitions and some awkwardness about introducing other figures in Himes's life, but Sallis's book does not seem to be based on any new research and relies almost entirely on reviews contemporary to the original publications of Himes's book augmented by what academic critics have written. It is very odd that Sallis provides so little of his own reading of Himes's writing.

The biographical research on which Sallis draws very, very heavily and without citation is the discerning and more succinct (209-page) 1997 biography by Edward Margolies and Michel Fabre, _The Several Lives of Chester Himes_. Margolies and Fabre knew Himes in his later years and did serious biographical research on Himes (and other black American expatriates to France, especially Richard Wright, who helped Himes in many ways when he moved to Paris). Sallis adds no discernible research and does not make more sense of Himes than they did, so I would recommend the Margolies and Fabre biography in preference to the Sallis one (and on Himes's writing, Stephen Milliken's 1976 book _Chester Himes_). One may read both biographies and both volumes of Himes' "memoirs" and still wonder "Who was this guy?" and "What made him tick?" (Himes's own answer was "hurt," but the way he deployed the category made it all but meaningless.)

Collected Works of Michal Kalecki: Studies in Applied Economics 1927-1941 (Vol 6)
Published in Hardcover by Clarendon Pr (December, 1996)
Authors: Michal Kalecki, Jerzy Osiatynski, and Chester Adam Kisiel
Average review score:

A prophet
Kalecki's vision of the capitalist way of organizing a society, and his description of the entrepreneurial behavior are some of the best theories I've read in my road to the minor in economics. I recommend this author for his marxist elements, and his simplistic tools.
